Partners who can actually carry the product

Distributor & importer search

Finding a distributor is easy. Finding one who sells your product rather than parking it is the hard part. We map the channel, score the candidates, approach them on your behalf and screen what comes back.

The problem

Most distributor searches end one of three ways. The company signs the first partner who showed interest — usually the one with spare capacity, which is rarely a good sign. Or it signs an exclusive with a large distributor who adds the product to a catalogue of four hundred others and never calls again. Or it spends two years at trade fairs collecting cards that lead nowhere.

The underlying mistake is the same each time: the partner was selected from who was available, not from who was right.

What we do instead

We start from the channel, not from the candidate. Before any name is approached we establish how your category actually reaches the buyer in that country — because the answer changes what kind of partner you need, and sometimes tells you that you need none.

  • Channel mapping. Whether the route runs through importers, master distributors, regional wholesalers, agents, buying groups or direct retail listings — and who controls each step.
  • Candidate universe. The full set of companies in that channel, not the handful that are easy to find in English.
  • Screening. Portfolio fit and conflicts, coverage, customer base, apparent financial substance, warehousing and logistics capability, and whether they actually sell or merely hold stock.
  • Approach. Contact in the local language with a proposition written for a distributor’s economics — margin, exclusivity, support and volume — rather than a product brochure.
  • Qualification. Structured conversations that separate genuine interest from politeness, and a briefing on each serious candidate before you meet them.

Distributor, importer, agent — which do you need?

These words are used interchangeably and they should not be. The commercial consequences are very different:

Partner typeTakes title to goodsTypical roleWhere it fits
ImporterYesHandles customs, registration and compliance; may or may not sell on activelyRegulated categories, or markets where import is the barrier
DistributorYesBuys, stocks, sells on and often markets the product in the territoryMost consumer and industrial goods with a stocking requirement
AgentNoIntroduces and sells on commission; you invoice the end customerHigh-value, low-volume or project-based sales
Private-label buyerYesBuys your production under their own brandManufacturers with spare capacity and no brand ambition in that market

How the search runs

  1. Define the partner profile. Territory, category, channel, expected volumes, and what you can offer on margin, exclusivity and support.
  2. Map the channel. Establish the real route to the buyer and the partner types that control it.
  3. Build and score the candidate list. You see the list, with the scoring, before anyone is approached.
  4. Approach. Structured contact in the local language, with follow-up run to completion.
  5. Screen and shortlist. Qualification calls, conflict checks and a written briefing on each serious candidate.
  6. Support the negotiation. Sample handling, pricing structure, terms and the first order — we stay in it until product moves.

On exclusivity

Distributors ask for exclusivity early and often. It is not automatically wrong, but it should be earned rather than granted: tie it to agreed volumes, define the territory tightly, set a term with review points, and keep a clean exit if the numbers are not met.

We flag the clauses that matter commercially and the ones that quietly lock a market for years. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice — your counsel should draft and review the agreement — but we will tell you when a term is going to cost you the market.

What you receive

Every engagement ends in assets you own outright. On this service that means:

  • A channel map for the target market, showing how your category actually reaches the buyer
  • A scored candidate list of distributors, importers or private-label buyers, with the reasoning
  • Approach material written for a partner’s economics, in the market’s language
  • Qualification notes and a written briefing on each serious candidate
  • A shortlist you can meet, with conflicts and capacity already checked
  • Support through samples, pricing, terms and the first order

Who this is for

  • Manufacturers with production capacity and no route to market abroad
  • Consumer brands that need shelf presence in a country where they have no team
  • Industrial suppliers whose product needs local stock, service or certification
  • Companies replacing an existing partner who has stopped performing

Frequently asked questions

Can you find distributors in a market where we have no presence at all?

That is the normal case. The work begins with channel mapping precisely because a company with no presence has no reliable view of how its category moves in that country, and the partner type it assumes it needs is often not the one that controls the route.

How many candidates will we end up meeting?

Fewer than you would expect, deliberately. A search that produces forty names has not been screened. The output is a shortlist of partners who fit the profile, have the capacity, have no blocking conflict and have shown real interest — usually a handful, each worth a serious meeting.

Do you handle the negotiation?

We support it: pricing structure, margin expectations, volume commitments, territory and the commercial shape of the agreement, plus sample logistics and the first order. The decision is yours and the contract should be reviewed by your own legal counsel.

What if the market turns out not to need a distributor?

Then we say so. In some categories and some countries the efficient route is direct to a small number of large buyers, in which case this becomes a B2B lead generation brief instead and we scope it that way.
